Sipson Slideshow

A couple months of a 90 minute one way journey to and from Sipson with a 40 some odd pound camera and an audio recorder yielded this. I have only the lovely people of Sipson and Harmondsworth and Harlington to thank for their help and allowing me not only into their homes but their lives.

No Third Runway

Here are some of the shots I think are the best from Heathrow.  Trying to cull together around 15 prints in the darkroom for presentation.  I’ve settled on 16″x 20″ fiber based paper.  In all, I have about 70 negatives to choose from.  From that I probably have about 30 different setups.  Many times I would make two exposures from a setup.  Sometimes I would make only one and very rarely, I think only twice, would I make more than one exposure.

This is one of the instances I took several exposures.  Unfortunately I was not happy with any of the results.  Being confined to shooting behind the double glazed windows of the hotel made for smudges, smears, dirt, warping and distortion to take place with these images.  It shows especially when blown up to the 16×20.  You can see the distortion and exposure falloff in the right side of frame.  Too bad it didn’t really work out because the view shows Heathrow to the south and Sipson and its houses just in the foreground.

Another instance where I took several exposures.  I wanted to make sure I got several tries at this.  I was restricted to picking one shot due to the time constraints of using the 5×4 with the members of NoTRAG.  The organization has done an amazing job fighting the airport’s expansion.  So I felt having all the women involved was a necessity.  I wanted to use the sign as a frame line and the houses to be the backdrop.  I still really don’t know how I feel about the outcome of the photo in general though.

Hatton Cross

I already have a shot of a plane from the vantage point in Sipson where the 3rd runway will be built.  I needed to see if I could find a shot of what it will be like for those that are left behind on both sides of the new proposed runway.  So I went on Google Earth of course and tried to find where the closest houses where to the two existing runways.  I found what I was looking for at Hatton Cross.  As the planes came in I followed them closer and closer to the runway.  I found about four houses literally right next to the tarmac.  I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw a family drive up to one of the houses and get out with groceries and the days worth of shopping.

The noise was deafening.

The noise was deafening.

I kept photographing and eventually a 747 came overhead.  I said the 737 was loud?  This was almost unbearable.  And I didn’t do any funky lens tricks or anything folks.  This is shot on a 28mm.  That should give you an idea of where the plane is in relation to the ground/house/me.
UMMMM.

UMMMM.
